THE CEPLIS AFFAIR
DVD, Latvia, Latvijas Filma, Selection, digitally remastered, drama, Cult Movie, Latvijas Filma, LATVIAN CULTURAL CANON, bestseller, Rolands Kalniņš, fiction, Golden classicsIn the 1920s, a resourceful man Edgars Ceplis establishes a joint-stock company that produces Latvian clay bricks for export. Number of people get involved in his venture, expecting the major profit promised by Mr. Ceplis, soon though it turns out his enterprise is doomed to failure – the clay is not appropriate for bricks. Nonetheless this setback doesn’t inconvenience his social status or hinder his ability to get through dramatic situations as a winner, playing other investors and few smaller pawns, even his lover, a typewriter Austra Zīle.
“The Ceplis Affair” creates a romanticized and even an idyllic image of the first independent Latvian state, while offering a rather ironic perspective on business activities of the entrepreneurs of that time.
The movie is a striking study focusing on characters and the Latvian mentality, stylistically refined satire on the ever-present vices and archetypical weaknesses.
A vivid image gallery of excellent actor performances has not lost anything in its topicality even today.
This movie with certainty can be considered one of the greatest films in the history of the Latvian cinematography and one of its cornerstones. It is included in the Latvian Cultural Canon.
Film was digitally restored by Locomotive film studio in 2017.
