FOUR WHITE SHIRTS (BREATHE DEEPLY…)
DVD, Latvia, Latvijas Filma, Selection, digitally remastered, drama, Cult Movie, LATVIAN CULTURAL CANON, bestseller, Rolands Kalniņš, romantic, fiction, Golden classicsDuring the Soviet time the film “Four White Shirts” was known under the different, imposed by censorship, title “Breathe deeply …” It is a movie – phenomenon, because despite the fact that under the Soviets it was shelved and reached wider audience only twenty years after its completion, the film continued to live by word of mouth and in the songs composed by Imants Kalniņš. The film tells a story of a young songwriter and his clash with the censorship apparatus. Creators of the film almost prophetically predicted the further fate of their own work ironizing about a secret censorship under the Soviet system.
A phone repairman Cēzars Kalniņš in his spare time composes songs and plays with his friends in a band. However, in order to get the band to perform for a public, they have a long way to go for obtaining all the permits. A member of the Cultural Commission Anita Sondore superficially listens to Cēzar’s songs and criticizes them as indecent. When she gets to know the composer himself, she changes her mind, however, even she can no longer stop the grindstone of the bureaucratic censorship. It is considered to be one of the most outstanding and popular Latvian movies and it has been included in the Latvian Cultural Canon.
Digitally restored by Locomotive Productions in 2017.
