A boy Bonifācijs Paulāns, nicknamed by his family Boņuks, has his own joys and troubles, surrounded by a bevy of aunties who often annoy this small man. His best friend is a dog Žiks and his only true love – a neighbour’s daughter Bigi. When Bigi is getting ready for wedding, the little Boņuk’s heart almost breaks in pieces.
The director Jānis Streičs in interviews has often emphasized that this is one of the most significant movies of his lifetime. A loving dedication to his native region Latgale is based on the novel by Jānis Klīdzējs. The movie was shot in 1991, at the time when Latvia regained its freedom. It was not only the first movie ever made in the Latgalian language, but the first movie ever produced in the restored Latvian state and the first entry for Oscars – the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film.
Film was digitally restored by Locomotive film studio in 2017.
