Modris is a regular 17-year-old with a girlfriend and few good pals at school. But addiction to gambling complicates his relationship with mother, especially, since she keeps on reminding her son that his father is in prison, so Modris must have inherited his bad genes. Things turn from bad to worse in the middle of the Nordic winter when Modris pawns his mother’s electric heater to get cash for gambling. She reports him to the police and, as he begins his adventures in the Latvian justice system, his attitude towards the world outside changes. Soon Modris becomes determined to find the father he never knew.

Modris had its world premiere in Toronto International Film Festival. The film received a special mention in San Sebastian film festival, best director award at Tbilisi film festival and Kinoshock Film Festival. At the Latvian National Film Festival Lielais Kristaps Modris was named Best Debut, while Rezija Kalnina picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress, it is also the Oscar entry from Latvia in 2014.
