DVD, Latvia, Latvijas Filma, Selection, Dāvis Sīmanis, documentaries, music, special interestThis film is both a picturesque telling of the creation of Richard Wagner’s opera Valkyrie at the Latvian National Opera, as well as a look into the imagination of the production’s director. Featured are the opera’s director Viesturs Kairišs, conductor Andris Nelsons, stage designer Ilmārs Blumbergs and the group of actors that play Wagner’s mythological characters in the phantasmagoric dreamworld of the main protagonist. The film was awarded the FIPRESCI Jury Prize at the Lielais Kristaps Film Festival in 2009.
The DVD also contains two documentary short films by director Dāvis Sīmanis:
VERSION. LNO (2006, 20 min.) – a look at the opera as a magical place where the combination of art and the hard work of many people allows the viewer to dream and regain his/her humanity. Best Debut at the Lielais Kristaps Film Festival (2007). THE DRAUGHTSMAN (2007, 18 min.) – an intimate and symbolic portrait of the great Latvian artist Ilmārs Blumbergs.
